Understand what a boiler is doing

A boiler does not blow hot air like a furnace. It heats water and circulates it through radiators or baseboard loops, and the heat radiates from those into the rooms. That matters for troubleshooting, because a no-heat problem on a boiler usually is not the boiler failing to fire, it is the hot water failing to circulate or the heat failing to transfer. The safe checks you can do yourself

A few things are safe to check before calling. Confirm the thermostat is set correctly and calling for heat, since a dead thermostat battery or a wrong setting is an easy miss. Look at the boiler's pressure gauge: most systems run in a normal range, often around a bar or so cold, and a gauge reading very low points to low system pressure, a common cause of no heat. Check that the boiler's power switch and breaker are on. And feel the radiators or baseboards, are they warm at all, warm in some rooms but not others, or cold everywhere? That pattern is a genuine clue.

Reading the pattern of cold

Where the cold is tells you a lot. If the whole house is cold and the boiler is running, the usual suspects are a failed circulator pump that is not moving the water, low system pressure, or air locked in the loops. If some rooms are warm and others cold, the problem is more likely trapped air in specific loops or a failed zone valve serving the cold area, and bleeding the air from those loops often restores them. If the boiler is making banging or rumbling noises along with poor heat, that points at scale on the heat exchanger, the mineral buildup the local hard water leaves.

Why boilers reward yearly service

Most boiler no-heat emergencies grow out of something a routine service visit would have caught. A yearly look at system pressure, air in the loops, the circulator and expansion tank, and scale on the exchanger catches the faults that would otherwise strand a household without heat on the coldest night of the year. Few systems reward a modest scheduled spend more, and since hydronic heat is harder to nurse along once it quits than a forced-air setup, keeping up that service habit counts for even more than it does with a furnace.

When repair turns into replacement

A healthy boiler lasts a long time and stays worth fixing far beyond the point where you would retire a water heater. The replacement conversation starts in specific situations: the heat exchanger has cracked, parts for an old model are no longer available, or the efficiency gap versus a modern condensing boiler has grown large enough to pay back the change. A cracked heat exchanger in particular is a replace, not a repair. If your boiler is old and the repairs are stacking up, it is worth an honest assessment of whether continued repairs or a replacement is the better spend, and a replacement is also the chance to right-size and add proper controls. And a relief valve that keeps weeping is never solved by plugging it; it is a safety device, and a dripping one is telling you something that needs looking at.
